How to Make Color Blocked Velvet Pillows

A DIY project that's easy and fun and perfect to give as a holiday gift.

DIY Color Blocked Velvet Pillows

By Holly Wade

Not only is velvet trending right now, but it’s perfect for the holidays, even when it comes to decor! I love velvet on so much more than just my clothes, so I found several bright colors to make these color blocked velvet pillows to decorate my home for winter. Something about velvet makes my home feel cozy, and the soft fabric makes them comfortable to lean on.

Sewing these pillows is easy enough for a beginner. One side is color blocked with 2-3 colors (my favorite is the triangle) and the other side is a solid color. This tutorial is for the triangle pattern, but you can achieve the straight blocked pattern with the same instructions, just different shapes. Note that this tutorial is much easier with low-stretch velvet fabric (rather than velour) if you can find it.

Instructions

Step 1: Cut one square (backside) in desired size. This example is about 15 inches; 14 once sewn. Then cut two equal sized triangles based on the size of the back.

Step 2: Pin the sides of the triangles together (where they will meet on the pillow) with the right sides facing together. Sew one straight line to sew triangles together. Unfold.

Note, you can follow these same steps with other patterns as well.

Step 3: Place the right sides of the triangle piece and the solid back together and pin all the way around, leaving about 3 inches open on the bottom of the pillow. Sew all the way around, backstitching at each end between the opening.

Step 4: Pull the pillow right side out through the opening.

Step 5: Stuff the pillow through the opening. Use something like a chopstick to push the stuffing all the way to the corners and edges. Stuff until it reaches desired feeling.

Step 6: Stitch up the opening with a needle and thread using an invisible stitch or similar. It will be on the bottom and it’s small, so it doesn’t need to be perfect.

Display several together for cozy décor that’s perfect all winter long!
