Light Another Candle

Words of Wisdom

We all know by now that comparison is the thief of joy. And we know comparing your reality to someone else’s highlight reel is never a great idea.

But today I wanted to chat about lifting up those around you, and cheering your peers on, all while doing so in an authentic way.

When the tide rises, we all float. And especially in a newer industry like blogging and this age of the influencers in which we are currently.

It can be easy – so, so easy – to hear about what someone else in your industry is doing and then get caught up spiraling down the rabbit hole of comparison, jealousy, and envy.

Common thoughts might be “but she’s younger than me” or “she started her blog and Instagram years after me” or some other notion surrounding this innocent peer in which you’re comparing yourself to.

And I get it – heck, if you’ve had your blog and/or Instagram for seven years, let’s say, and a newbie blogger comes into the scene and within a year they’ve surpassed your IG following and are getting partnerships with brands you’d kill to work with, yes of course you’re not just going to look away and not think about it. We’re human, after all.

A candle loses nothing by lighting another candle.

- James Keller

However, what if you shifted your perspective and turned it on its head and found it in yourself to feel genuinely happy for this person. Rather than feeling bitter about it, dig deep within yourself to support her.

Because guess what? Feeling negative towards or envious of this person will do nothing positive for you. It will likely do more harm than good.

Wherever you are in this moment in your life is exactly where you are supposed to be. If you work hard, and I mean work your ass off (laziness is not cute unless it’s a Saturday afternoon and there’s a Netflix situation happening on your TV), and you’re passionate about what you’re doing, the pieces will fall into place.

And, above all, be kind. Be supportive. Be happy for others. Be genuine.

You will lose nothing by doing so. In fact, your candle might even shine brighter.

One more thing
