Trending: Military Vibes with an 80s Twist

One trend that seems to come back time and time again is the military influence. Yes, over time, it appears in different forms. But right now we’re seeing it collide with the 80s revival which is so hot right now. Marc Jacobs’ resort collection is a perfect example of this 80s influence that is currently trending. In this particular outfit I’m wearing, I adore the 80s twist this look takes on an otherwise more utilitarian vibe.

How to Wear It

Now, when it comes to wearing the military print, you want to make sure you’re making it take on a fresh feel and less like you just walked off the set of Saving Private Ryan. Mixing it with more feminine and understated pieces is a good way to start. Whether that means mixing an army print with a lace slip dress or wearing it with a casual sweatshirt dress (like what you see in these photos), the juxtaposition of a little girly and a little utility is something we adore.

What I’m Wearing

I immediately fell in love with this Marc Jacobs anorak (also available here and here, and less expensive version here), which I got at Hampden Clothing. As a side note, Hampden Clothing is one of my favorite independently owned boutiques. Locatedin Charleston, South Carolina, owner Stacy Smallwood curates the very best assortment of fashion forward trends and designers to be wearing now.

I love the oversized look of the anorak with that truly authentic military print. Add in those killer patches and pins, and it puts the look over the top. Indeed, the proliferation of both patches and pins is a fun trend that is obviously a nod to the 80s. I paired the jacket with my ATM black sweater dress that is just as comfortable as it looks (also love this one and this one). I topped the entire look off with my Ray-Ban sunnies, my Golden Goose glittery sneaks (less expensive versions here and here), my Chloe bag (which is, unfortunately, out of stock, but a similar Chloe option here and similar less expensive options here and here), and NARS ‘Scarlet Empress’ lipstick, ideal for a day walking around, running errands, and exploring the city.

3 Ways You Can Wear It

So, would you consider embracing this look? If so, we have three ways for you to adopt the look!

Option 1 – Designer Runway Look

Option 2 – Look for Less

Option 3 – DIY Version

Now, if you’re in the mood for a little DIY project (an easy one, we promise!) you can get yourself a plain military jacket and some patches and pins and put them on however you’d like, and you have yourself your very own 80s inspired military jacket!
