Juxtaposition in Styling

First, what is juxtaposition in styling, you ask? Well, we are simply talking about creating an interesting outfit through unexpected combinations. As they say, opposites attract. And this certainly holds true when it comes to styling.

Lately we’ve been loving the juxtaposition of different looks when it comes to putting together outfits. Whether it’s leather and lace, a motorcycle jacket and florals, sneakers with skirts and dresses, plaid with suede, or as you see in these photos, a utility style jacket with a little black dress, it’s a look we are loving.

My Unexpected Combination

For my look, I chose this Kate Spade Mixed Lace Drop Waist Shift Dress as the base, as I think it’s a fun take on a little black dress (LBD). As you can see, the drop waist and lace details make it fun and flirty. Plus, I’ll be able to wear this piece throughout the fall due to its heavier weight.

But in order to take the look in an unexpected direction, I decided to pair it with this Topshop Camo Sequin Shirt Jacket. This totally unexpected pairing adds a utilitarian vibe to the conversely feminine dress. Plus, I adore how this jacket is anything but basic. In fact, it’s a jazzed up version of a utility jacket. What’s not to love about a combination of sequins and camo? Lastly, I finished my look off with tried and true favorites: Rag & Bone booties and Ray-Ban sunnies.
