Tips for Wearing Marsala

As we mentioned here, Pantone selected marsala as its color of the year for 2015.

Keep in mind that Pantone is the color resource for industries far beyond fashion. Graphic designers, interior designers, and more all look to Pantone as the authority. For me personally, the color has been difficult to incorporate into my fashion this year. But all that is changing now! Marsala is perfect for fall!

Here are our top 6 six tips for wearing marsala this fall:

1. Link it with leopard

This wins as my favorite way to wear marsala. Marsala + leopard = a match made in fall fashion heaven. Note how I accented this Tibi dress with animal print accessories, including this M2Malletier bag and Aquazzura pumps.

Side note: if you are looking to add some animal print to your fall wardrobe, check out our current favorite selections here:

2. Go with gray

To cool down the warm tone a bit, pair it with gray, like I did with these Via Spiga fringe booties, this Proenza Schouler bag, and Mignonne Gavigan scarf necklace and bracelet (use code MGfallCC for 20% off entire site).

3. Nail it with neutrals

You really can’t go wrong with pairing any neutrals with marsala. The color in and of itself is very powerful, so neutrals are a safe pairing to let it shine. We already covered leopard (which I consider to be a neutral) and gray. Other neutrals that pair go well with marsala include navy and black.

4. Make it monotone

Wearing all marsala creates a seamless, sophisticated look. I love how the always-stylish Olivia Palermo wore this look, as seen in InStyle Magazine. In addition, see how Beyonce and Taylor Swift have donned the all-marsala look on the red carpet.

5. Curate some color

If you want to go for the unexpected, add in some color. Bold colors that work well with marsala include cobalt blue (as seen with my Mignonne Gavigan jewelry), mustard, and even teal / turquoise. Adding color to marsala can be tricky, so choose the tones carefully.

6. Add it with accents

If you’re still not sure this color is for, try incorporating it via accents. Small accents (like a bag or nail polish) allow you to try the tone in a safe way – a smaller dose and a less pricey manner.
