The Many Ways to Wear Velvet
written by Julie Weinstein
Velvet is, more often than not, a hot trend for fall and winter. And this year is certainly no exception.
The luxe, soft fabric makes everything feel more lush and slightly indulgent. And it doesn’t hurt that the fabric is soft and cozy for the cooler days that are bound to be ahead.
Though, on the flip side, you can find lots of very lightweight velvet options out there, too. Indeed, it’s a versatile fabric!
Truly, if you look around, velvet is everywhere. You’ll find it in dresses, shirts, skirts, and pants, as well as shoes, bags, and other accessories.
5 Tips on How to Wear Velvet
1. Don’t shy away from color
Since velvet is such a fall and winter friendly fabric, you might initially think to wear dark or neutral colors, such as grey and black. However, opt for color because colorful velvet, whether in deep jewel tones or bright and light tones (think blush) is absolutely stunning.
2. Dress up your velvet
Velvet can most certainly be worn for more formal affairs. Whether as a dress or throwing a velvet blazer or cape on top of whatever else you’re wearing, it’s definitely black tie approved.
3. Keep it casual
Just like with dressy affairs, velvet is absolutely great for casual looks, too. In fact, one of our favorite outfits is a velvet top and boyfriend jeans. Like we said, this is a versatile fabric!
4. Start with accessories
If throwing on a velvet piece is simply not your thing, that’s ok. Start small with shoes or accessories. It can even be as simple as a velvet clutch.
5. Make it edgy
Now, if you think velvet is a tad too “feminine” for you, just add an edgy element, such as a leather jacket or studded accessories.
